Compassionate cosmetics

,

No matter how big a brand (or a country) is, it pays for us to make sure that their business practices are deserving of our dollars. By Sofea Famian.

Ethical cosmetics are an important part of living a peaceful and compassionate lifestyle. Too many makeup products, and even body products like shampoos, are not designed with compassion in mind. The testing process for even major brands is harmful to animals and the environment. Not only do they run vicious tests on animals that make them bleed or weep, but they also routinely also use pig or cow fat to create soaps. This is known as ‘stearic acid’, which can also be made from vegetable fats. If you want to be careful, establish its origin. Buying ethical cosmetic products can be one of the most challenging aspects of shopping, but it is possible if you know what to look for.

Use vegan or halal products

Using vegan and halal products is the easiest way to ensure that what you are using is made with compassion and love for the environment, people and animals. With cosmetics labelled ‘vegan’, not only is animal testing eliminated, but it is also guaranteed that no animal by-products are used in their manufacture. Halal products also never use animal by-products in their formulations.

Coconut oil is an all-purpose oil for makeup removal, hair hydration and skin hydration. It’s also very affordable, never tested on animals and always a compassionate choice.

Avoid products made or sold in China

This can take a little bit of effort. Avoiding cosmetics that are available for sale in China brings us one step closer to avoiding products that are tested on animals. If a company says they are ethical, but sells in China, then they are not upholding their company’s values. The reason? The Chinese government requires all cosmetic products sold in the country to be tested on animals. If cosmetics companies do not submit their products for animal testing in Chinese laboratories, then these companies cannot do business in China.

Minimise use of products

The fewer products you use, the more you can focus on your cosmetics being ethical. If you have too many cosmetics, it gets harder to make the right choices. Keep things simple.

Buy from ethical brands

There are so many choices you can make when looking for ethical cosmetics, but always be sure that the brand you are using abides by their morals and ethics. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions about where your products really come from.
