A feast of images offers a glimpse at the people and designs at London’s hottest modest fashion event. Words and images by Zinah Nur Sharif.
The most anticipated event of the year to many Muslimahs in London and around the UK, Smoky Not Smudgy happens once a year and can’t be missed. I waited forever and a day for this event. When it finally came around, on 17 November at Imperial College, it did not disappoint.
The heart of the event was to raise as much money as possible for children and orphans in need. And what a way to do it! Women gathered together not only to splurge, but also to enjoy a fashion show and meet other wonderful women.
Every year brings new faces, new small business and new designers. This year’s designers included Biah, Nasreen, Miss Kaan, Sazamo Bridal, Afa Bee, Zayna Couture and Nisaa, as well as my label, ZINAH. It started out with models getting beautified for the show, designers preparing the outfits and organisers ensuring things were on schedule.
Attendees, meanwhile, were enjoying themselves: purchasing goodies, joining skincare classes, decorating cupcakes and learning makeup tricks and skills.
Once I’d soaked in the atmosphere, I found myself in awe amongst the pretty designs, the swift movements of the models and the dreamy gaze of the audience.
The show ended with loud claps and cheers, leaving each designer with a beaming grin on her face. As I was going around capturing post-show moments, I ran into faces both familiar and new, and enjoyed some lovely chit-chat with fellow designers and attendees.
