Keep an eye out for this debut event of Muslim fashion designers in the United States, writes Afia R Fitriati.
The increasing number of modest fashion designers, shops and fashion shows across the United States has inspired an organisation called the Modesty Defined Islamic Fashion Council of America (MDIFC) to create a platform for US-based Muslim designers to converge and have wider exposure for their creations.
In February 2014, MDIFC plans to host its inaugural USA Islamic Fashion Week. The event will be held in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia areas – also known as the DMV. This avenue will feature a fashion show entitled Runway and Live Fashion Art Galleries as well as seminars, networking opportunities and activities for the general public.
MDIFC founder Romana Kerns-Muhammad expresses her hope for the debut event, “The success of this endeavour, USA Islamic Fashion Week, will help foster and promote the launching of many thriving Muslim-owned fashion and fashion-related business ventures in the USA.”
Romana is a jewellery artist and a former fashion model who is also the founder of Muslimahs United to Serve community.
The inaugural USA Islamic Fashion Week will take place from 13th to 16th February 2014. US-based designers who wish to register their labels to be part of the event can do so on the event’s website. Applications are accepted until 15th November 2013.
