Working the Season’s Trends
Summer 2012 runway presentations from the likes of Rick Owens and House of Holland were overrun with pinks, peaches and corals, while labels including Prabal Gurung and Betsey Johnson chose to make an impact with bold lips.
Here, the founder and creative director of Senna Cosmetics, Eugenia Weston, who has worked as a make-up artist for top fashion photographers including Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton, offers her guide to making the season’s top trends work for you.
While beauty magazines often entice us into experimenting with the latest on-trend colors, Weston argues a woman’s skin type should always be at the forefront of her mind when it comes to selecting cosmetics.
“Use bright colors strategically. Coral lip or eye color looks sensational on warmer skin tones,” the expert told Relaxnews.
“Classic clear reds are knockout on any skin tone and hair color. Fuchsia pinks and violets are perfect on fair skin tones and blondes.”
Weston also urges her followers not to get carried away when it comes to vibrant shades, arguing that “keeping brights to one area or two at most is best.”
With the warmer weather underway in the Northern Hemisphere, the make-up artist adds that ladies should bear in mind the impact a golden glow can have on beauty requirements.
“With tan skin you need sparkle and luminosity,” says Weston, citing “vibrant corals, sparkling gold and metallic bronze eye shadows and livelier blush with peachy warmth” as essentials. The expert also advises investing in a sheer tinted moisturizer with SPF “that has a little glow to it” and a sheer bronzer to even out skin tone.
And when it comes to the ultimate multi-task product to invest in for the summer months — Weston names lipstick as a must-have.
“A good lip color can do double duty, brightening lips and coloring cheeks,” she explains, before imparting her final words of wisdom: “I think it’s important for women to continue to experiment much more with makeup colors, styles and techniques…It’s all temporary, isn’t it?”
Eugenia Weston was one of many special guests at America’s Makeup Show Chicago event, which brought together top industry exhibitors and speakers from all areas of make-up artistry from June 17-18. For more details see here.
