Jakarta Fire Victims Need Your Help
Tragic news from Indonesia prompts the urgent need for donations. By Afia R Fitriati.
Whilst the blessed month is drawing to an end soon, we urge you to save some space in your hearts and minds for our sisters and brothers in faith who will very likely be spending their Eid without homes .
Hundreds of families were left homeless after a huge fire destroyed about 400 homes and 200 businesses in the low-income, congested area of Karet Tengsin in Jakarta, Indonesia on Monday, August 6th. Police and fire officials suspect that the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring. Most victims of the fire held jobs such as market vendors, motorcycle taxi drivers and labourers. Some had to resort to sleeping in nearby cemeteries because they had nowhere else to go.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in a hadith, ‘The Believers are like one body [in their mutual love, mercy and compassion]: if one organ is in pain, then the rest of the body is in pain.’ (Bukhari & Muslim) May this month of mercy inspire in us a higher compassion for the plight of our Muslim brothers and sisters, wherever they may be.
Donations for victims of the Jakarta fire can be made through Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT), an Indonesia-based non-profit organisation whose mission is to provide aid and rescue to those in need, regardless of religion, ethnicity or nationality. International payments by PayPal can also be made on the website.
