Maryam Yusof shares a step-by-step tutorial on adding studs to an old piece of clothing in order to give it a new lease on life.
Not long ago, studs used to be associated almost exclusively with biker, punk and goth subcultures.
Over the last few years though, studs have become much more mainstream, with variations being presented on fashion runways and high street. And thank goodness for that, because I love wearing studs for the extra spunk they add to my outfits!
I recently came across a handicraft store selling DIY studs and bought a pack to embellish an old cardigan. Here’s a simple tutorial on how you can include studs to make an old item look brand new!
Things you need:
- Item to stud
- Masking tape
- Metal tweezers (optional)
- Flat and padded surface (Like a mouse pad)
Step 1: Plan
Before you start studding, you should first plan your design. Sketch out on a piece of paper the design that you’d like to implement and make sure you have enough studs to complete the entire design.
Step 2: Prepare
If you’re working on a studded design similar to mine where you need the studs to align in straight lines, mark a line on the cloth using a masking tape and follow the masking tape as a guide.
It is also a good idea to use a flat, padded item as a surface to make it easier to pin the studs into the article of clothing. I used the back of a mousepad for this project.
Step 3: Pin it down
Once you’re done preparing the marking, you can start pressing the studs onto the article of clothing you’re working on. Work on one row at a time and press the prongs of the studs into the middle, one at a time with your fingers or with metal tweezers. Be sure not to press the prongs all the way in as you may need to make adjustments as you go along.
Step 4: Finishing the project
Once you’re done placing the studs onto your article of clothing and have made sure that they match your design, ensure that the studs are fastened on by pushing the prongs into the centre as much as possible. This is very important as loose studs could poke into your skin or snag on the cloth.
Yes, it’s really that simple! You don’t need any extra tools or technical skills to get this done. With these studs, you can give a new lease on life to any of the clothes that you haven’t worn in a long time.
Have fun with those studs!
