For many women who live in the Western hemisphere, shopping for clothing with higher necklines and looser fittings can be a very tricky and time-consuming experience. Spotting an opportunity behind their shared problem, a group of women with a penchant for dressing modestly created Mode-sty, an online boutique specialising in modest clothing. The US-based site began operations on June 27th this year with a 48-hour sale. The response has been overwhelmingly positive so far. ‘We made our first sale within 10 minutes of opening the store,’ says Sarah Ferguson, one of the site’s administrators. The first flash sale featured items from well-known labels such as Rachel Roy, BCBG Max Azria, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, as well as up-and-coming designs from Zeena and Margaret Mousley.
A large part of Mode-sty’s membership base comprises Muslim women who are looking for stylish clothes that meet the modesty requirements of Islam. But the site offers a range of coverage levels that customers of any faith or background can choose from. The first coverage category is dedicated to clothes with short sleeves and form-fitting silhouettes. The second showcases elbow-length sleeves and higher necklines, while the third is dedicated to articles of clothing that cover the body loosely from collarbone to feet. Mode-sty also offers the service of stylists who can help shoppers style and layer low-coverage clothes to create a more conservative look. ‘Our value is in saving women from hours of frustrating shopping by providing a good selection of stylish, modest clothes to meet the modesty needs of a wide range of women,’ explains Sarah. ‘Any women who are tired of spending hours shopping for boring and shapeless modest clothes are part of our target market.’
Although based in the US, Mode-sty also caters to customers based outside the US. They apply a flat shipping rate of US$20 for international destinations. To catch Mode-sty future flash sales, visit their website.
