Upcycle Idea: Tank Top Totes

We love and support the upcycling of personal items because new and usable products can be transformed. This saves money, protects the environment while providing new fashion accessory!

Here’s a creative project we hope you will enjoy trying.

Turn your unwanted tank tops into another wardrobe staple — tote bags!

Crafty Nest has a great tutorial to show you how.

1. Remove all tags. Turn the tanktop inside out and if it has a bra liner, cut the elastic off.

2. Place tank top with straps aligning on top of each other. Fold the bottom of the tank over itself as this will become the pockets. Mark where you want the seams in between each pocket with pins or an erasable fabric marker (blue and red arrows).

3. Sew the seams that divide each pocket. Sew the bottom together about 1/4 inch from the edge. Back-stitch to lock the seam.

4. This tote bag is reversible.

1. Remove all tags. Turn the tanktop inside out and if it has a bra liner, cut the elastic off.

2. Place tank top with straps aligning on top of each other. Measure and mark the seam, five inches from the bottom of the tank top. Baste two rows (about 1/4 inch apart) along the line you marked. Do not back-stitch. Then pull the bobbin threads tight as you slide the fabric inward to gather it.

3. Cut off the excess fabric about 1/2 inch past the seam.

4. Turn the tote bag right-side out.

There you have it! Cool right? So, do give it a go.
